The federal executive council (FEC) has approved the sum of N6 billion for road rehabilitation projects in the federal capital territory (FCT).

Anthony Ogunleye, FCTA chief press secretary, said the road rehabilitation contracts were approved on Wednesday.

The project will cover access roads to the Idu screening and isolation centre, Gosa solid waste disposal site, and the area around the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) reference laboratory in Gaduwa district.

The emergency contract approvals were based on memos presented by Muhammad Bello, minister of the FCT, to the council.

Umar Jibril, executive secretary of the FCTA, said the deplorable state of the access road to the NCDC facility at Gaduwa prompted the decision to embark on an emergency procurement process to rehabilitate it.

The sum of N3,524,524,912.81 was approved for the emergency rehabilitation of access roads to the Idu screening and isolation centre, as well as the Gosa solid waste disposal site in the FCT.

The council also approved N2,493,389,942.88 for emergency road access to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) reference laboratory in Gaduwa district.

The executive secretary said the rehabilitation works will include the installation of stand-alone solar streetlights.

He also noted that the projects are essential to the FCT administration in its fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, adding that the funds were sourced from the revised FCT year 2020 statutory budget.
