Rodger Federer, Swiss tennis legend, is set to miss the rest of the 2020 season after undergoing a second knee surgery a few weeks ago.
In a statement issued on his Twitter page, the 20-time Grand Slam winner cited set back in rehabilitation following the recent surgery.
The 2020 tennis season has been suspended since March due to COVID-19 pandemic.
The 38-year-old Swiss, who first had surgery on his right knee in February, said he experienced a setback during his initial rehabilitation and required another operation.
“A few weeks ago, having experienced a setback during my initial rehabilitation, I had to have an additional quick arthroscopic procedure on my right knee,” the statement read.
Federer, who previously missed majority of the 2016 season, however, hopes to return to his best next year.
“Now, much like I did leading up to the 2017 season, I plan to take the necessary time to be 100% ready to play at my highest level. I will look forward to seeing everyone back on tour at the start of the 2021 season,” he added.
The next Grand Slam tournaments — US Open and French Open — are expected to hold in the US and France on August 31, and September 20, respectively.
Federer has not played since losing a semi final match 7-6 (7-1) 6-4 6-3 to Novak Djokovic, at the Australian Open in January.
