The federal government has asked Muslim faithful to avoid religious gatherings and continue to practise social distancing as Ramadan approaches.

Regarded as a holy month, Ramadan is the period when Muslims observe fasting and prayers.

It is expected to begin in less than two weeks.

Sani Aliyu, national coordinator of the presidential task force (PTF) on COVID-19, on Tuesday, asked the public should continue to adhere strictly to the lockdown directives.

The lockdown directive earlier issued in Lagos, Ogun and the federal capital territory and which ended on April 13, has been extended by President Muhammadu Buhari by two weeks.

“We all know that we are approaching the holy month of Ramadan, which is very important to our communities and societies,” he said.

“I would like to emphasise the need for continued physical distancing and prevention measures during this period, including frequent washing of hands with soap and water as we observe our religious obligations.”

Aliyu thanked religious leaders and urged them to continue to engage the public on the importance of practising social distancing.

“I also seek the support of our religious leaders to please continue to engage the public and emphasise the importance of remaining safe during this really challenging period,” Aliyu said.

“COVID is a really serious issue of life and death. There is no doubt that we are in challenging times. These are difficult times and our ability to overcome this as a country demonstrates our strength.

“We definitely need to be strong, resilient, but we also need to be patient in order to overcome this pandemic.”
