The federal government says it has evacuated 161 Nigerians stranded in Libya.

In a statement on Tuesday, Kabiru Musa, Nigeria’s ambassador to Libya, said the evacuation was done in collaboration with the International Organisation for Migration (IOM).

Musa said the voluntary humanitarian repatriation (VHR) exercise was to ensure that migrating Nigerians were not stranded abroad.

“The evacuees departed the Mitiga International Airport, Tripoli on a chartered flight on Tuesday and are expected to arrive at the Murtala Mohammed Airport, Lagos, later in the day,” Musa said.

“The evacuees are 100 adult female, 37 adult male, 16 children, and eight infants.

“They will be received by officials on arrival to facilitate their resettlement and reintegration into the society.”

He added that the mission, in collaboration with relevant bodies, has continued to sensitise Nigerians against illegal migration including forced labour and slavery.

Musa reiterated the federal government’s resolve to ensure that no Nigerian is stranded or abandoned in detention facilities in Libya.
