The federal government has congratulated Elizabeth Oshoba for winning the WBC Silver featherweight title in Denmark.
On January 13, Oshoba defeated Michela Braga, the Italian boxer, by unanimous decision in their 10-round bout at the Royal Arena in Copenhagen.
The 26-year-old’s victory made her the first Nigerian female boxer to clinch a world title.
In a statement on Saturday, John Enoh, the minister of sports development, delivered the FG’s congratulatory message to Oshoba.
Enoh said Oshoba has not only “made history for herself but has also brought immense pride to our nation”.
The statement said her title win is a “shining example for aspiring athletes in Nigeria”.
“The Federal Government has congratulated Elizabeth Oshoba for becoming the first Nigerian female boxer to clinch a world title,” the statement reads.
“She has not only made history for herself but has also brought immense pride to our nation. This achievement is a shining example for aspiring athletes across the country.
“It is crucial that we continue to support and encourage women in sports, providing them with the platforms and opportunities they deserve.
“Oshoba’s journey to the top has been nothing short of inspiring. With an unblemished professional record of 7-0, she has not only claimed the World Champion title in the women’s featherweight category but has also etched her name in the annals of Nigerian sports history.”
The minister also appreciated Oshoba’s dedication and skills. Enoh added that his ministry is dedicated to developing sporting talents in line with the renewed hope agenda of President Bola Tinubu’s government.
