Festus Keyamo, minister of aviation and aerospace development, says the federal government has initiated the construction of a second runway at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

The announcement follows an incident which occurred at the Abuja airport.

On Sunday, one of the runways at the Abuja airport was temporarily shut after a landing mishap involving an Aero Contractors aircraft.

This had caused disruptions to flight operations, including delays in take-offs, and landings — leaving several aircraft circling the skies.

In a statement on Sunday, the minister expressed regret for the disruptions.

“Apologies for the flight disruption at the Abuja airport today, which affected flight operations throughout the country,” the ministry said.

“It was caused by an incident at the Abuja runway involving an aircraft, making it impossible for other aircraft to land for some time.

“Emphasising the necessity of a second runway, the Minister assured the public that the required land has been secured, and construction has promptly commenced.

“The urgent need for the Abuja second runway became evident today. My primary task upon assuming the role of aviation minister was to secure the land from local communities.

“Just two weeks ago, contractors moved to the site to begin construction of the Abuja second runway.”

Keyamo said the development aligns with the ministry’s commitment to enhancing safety and efficiency in air travel, ensuring a seamless experience for passengers and airlines alike.

In September, the federal government said it would deliver the second runway of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, within 12 months.
