Abike Dabiri-Erewa, chairperson of Nigerians In Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), has reacted to the report of two students of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), who ended up in a Bosnian refugee camp.
Abia Uchenna and Eboh Chinedu, the students, had travelled to Zagreb, capital of Croatia, to attend the fifth world inter-university championships held in the country.
The Nigerian students had participated in the competition and were preparing to return to Lagos via Istanbul, Turkey, on November 18 when they were arrested.
The 18-year-old table tennis players later found themselves in a refugee camp after being arrested by Croatian police officers.
In a tweet on Saturday, Dabiri-Erewa said Geoffrey Onyema, minister of foreign affairs, has intervened in the matter.
She said the ministry will provide updates as intervention continues.
“The Minister of Foreign Affairs is on this matter. It’s not as straightforward as you have reported, but the Minister has personally intervened. We should give an update as the intervention continues,” she wrote.
