Uba Sani at the attorneys-general conference in Kaduna
Uba Sani, governor of Kaduna, says lack of “coordinated action” by federal and state authorities in the administration of the justice system erodes public trust.
Sani spoke on Wednesday in Kaduna during the body of attorneys-general (BOAG) conference.
The Kaduna governor said the “fragmentation” of legal reforms by state and federal governments undermines public confidence in the justice system.
“For too long, the administration of justice in our country has been hampered by a lack of coordinated action,” Sani said.

“We have seen jurisdictional conflicts, duplication of efforts, and a fragmentation of legal reforms that slow down progress and create confusion.
“It is a gap that breeds inefficiency, frustrates citizens, and ultimately undermines public confidence in the rule of law.
“A lack of harmonisation can lead to a patchwork of legal standards across the country.

“This is not about one level of government ceding its authority to another, rather, it is about creating a symbiotic relationship where we can share ideas and address critical gaps.”
Also speaking at the conference, Lateef Fagbemi, attorney-general of the federation, said the delay in dispensation of justice has “severely strained” the country’s legal system.
Fagbemi said delay in trials contributes to prison congestion, especially with the rising number of awaiting trial inmates.
