Fidelity Bank Plc has released an official statement addressing a viral video where one of its branch managers allegedly ordered security men to beat up customers for allegedly being rude.

The incident took place in the Alagbado area of Lagos on Thursday.

The bank also released CCTV footage on Sunday via its Twitter handle as evidence of what supposedly happened on the day.

Earlier reports had it that two customers came into the bank to complain about the bank’s automated teller machine (ATM) services, but were beaten by security guards on the order of the branch manager.

But according to a statement signed by Charles Aigbe, a spokesman for the bank, the boys in the video were “shoulder surfing” and had no real intention of carrying out transactions on the ATM.

“Following the unfortunate incident on the video currently in circulation…we have obtained the attached CCTV footage at the ATM area which captures the full incident,” the statement read.

“As can be seen in the footage, a security personnel observed the boys shoulder surfing and upon his inquiry, they attacked him twice, leaving him with a bleeding eye before the intervention of the police.

“Whilst reiterating that no official of the bank ordered the assault as alleged, we do hereby state categorically that Fidelity bank does not encourage any form of violence.

“As a responsible corporate citizen, we assure all stakeholders that we will continue to emphasise the safety of all as investigations on this matter by the police continue.

“We thank all our customers and stakeholders who have reached out to us in the wake of this.”
