The Super Eagles of Nigeria have climbed one spot from 40th to 39th in the world based on FIFA’s latest rankings.

According to the list released on Thursday by the world football governing body, the three-time African champions remained rooted in sixth position on the continent.

The moderate improvement in the team’s global ranking is due to the slim 3-2 victory over Sierra Leone in the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier played at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Stadium in Monrovia, Liberia, on June 18.

In the latest log, Morocco, Senegal, and Tunisia retained their positions as the top three African teams, in that order while Algeria and Egypt punched above to complete the top five on the continent.

Meanwhile, Argentina remained number one in the world while France and Brazil maintained second and third spots, respectively. England and Belgium took the fourth and fifth positions in the ranking.

The next FIFA world ranking will be released on July 20, 2023.

In April, the Eagles had dropped to the team’s lowest spot in four years in the FIFA rankings.
