The Rivers state secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), situated along Port Harcourt/Aba expressway in Port Harcourt, has been engulfed by fire.

The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Friday, was alleged to have been masterminded by unknown persons.

Felix Obuah, Rivers state chairman of PDP, who spoke through Jerry Needam, his special adviser on media, blamed the incident on desperate politicians.

He said they were bent on stopping the party’s ward and local government congresses scheduled for Saturday.

“An attempt to burn the party secretariat has being carried out by desperate politicians who want the party to postpone the party’s ward and local government congresses scheduled to take place tomorrow, Saturday,” he said.

“They have failed because arrangements have concluded and we are going ahead. Nobody can stop it. PDP will come tops.”

The state fire service had reportedly put out the fire.

However, the police have placed the secretariat under surveillance.

Dan Bature, the state commissioner of police, ordered 24-hour security presence when he visited the place to assess the extent of damage.
