FIRS commissions CNG plant at new headquarters in Abuja

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has commissioned its newly installed compressed natural gas (CNG) plant at its proposed new corporate headquarters in Abuja.

In a statement on Tuesday, the commission said it marks a significant step in advancing the federal government’s clean energy transition.

According to the statement, the commissioning ceremony was led by Ismael Ahmed, chairman of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGi).

He was received by Tola Koleosho, chief of staff to the FIRS chairman; Mohammed Abubakar, the coordinating director, support services group (SSG) of FIRS; and other top management staff of the service.

“The adoption of CNG aligns directly with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to reducing energy costs, promoting environmental sustainability, and accelerating nationwide CNG adoption as part of the broader energy transition strategy,” the statement reads.

The FIRS said it remains dedicated to innovation and operational excellence in line with the renewed hope agenda of President Bola Tinubu.

On November 17, the federal government said it planned to set up 500 CNG stations nationwide over the next three years.

Oluwole Adama, executive director of the midstream and downstream gas infrastructure fund (MDGIF), said the initiative is aimed at speeding up Nigeria’s shift to cleaner, more affordable fuels and reducing reliance on petrol.

“The collaboration underscores the parties’ commitment to accelerating Nigeria’s transition to cleaner fuels by addressing infrastructure gaps across the country’s CNG value chain,” he said.

Adama noted that the project will help reduce the long queues currently seen at existing CNG stations by expanding access to refuelling points and ensuring a steady supply through enhanced logistics and distribution systems.
