What would have been the emergence of the first elected female governor in Nigeria may have been aborted, as collation of results by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Taraba state reaches its final phase.

Aisha Jumei Al-hasan, female and candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) was in an early lead, prompting widespread jubilation that she was all but confirmed as the country’s first female governor.

But Aisha has now been overtaken by Darius Ishaku of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). While she has polled 261,326 votes, Ishaku has 310,805 to his name.

Results from 15 local governments areas of the state have already been announced, and only one local government is left.
