Thomas Duncan, the first person to be diagnosed with Ebola Virus Disease in the United States of America, has died.
Authorities of Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital, where he was receiving treatment, confirmed that Duncan died on Wednesday morning.
Reports had been circulating that Duncan’s health situation was deteriorating but the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention had vowed that the virus would be contained in the US.
Duncan (pictured, in green) contracted the disease in Liberia while assisting a pregnant woman infected by the virus.
On September 19, Duncan left Monrovia for Brussel, capital of Belgium before arriving at Washington to connect a flight to Dallas, before reporting at the hospital four days later.
While all three people who contacted the virus in West Africa and were flown to US recovered, Duncan is the first to have died of the disease in the US.
Till date, there is no other confirmed case of Ebola in the country, although more than 100 people are being monitored.
Ebola has killed about 3, 439 and the situation is getting worse, particularly in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.
