The Lagos state government has alerted residents of VI, Ikoyi and some other parts of the state that the flood affecting them may last throughout the weekend.

In a statement, Tunji Bello, commissioner for environment and water resources, attributed the flood to the rise of seawater level, resulting in the inability of the lagoon to discharge water into the ocean.

He explained that this has caused backflow into the drainage channels affecting areas like Ikoyi, V.I, Dolphin and Oworoshoki.

The commissioner also said lowline areas like Isheri North and Magodo, up to Owode Onirin were being affected because the Ogun-Osun River Basin authority has been releasing its water into the river because it can no longer hold the Oyan dam.

He said the state government is also in talks with the officials of the Ogun-Osun River Basin authority to release their water gradually.

Bello assured residents that officials of the state were working on different measures to remove the constriction and blockades that would allow easy passage for the resultant flooding.
