Marcus Onobun, former speaker of the Edo state house of assembly and member representing Esan Central/Esan West/Igueben federal constituency, has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and joined the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a letter dated July 18 and addressed to the acting ward chairman of the PDP in Esan West LGA, Onobun said his resignation was with immediate effect.
He attributed his decision to “extensive reflection and consultation” with his constituents, political allies, and leaders.
“It has become evident that the internal crises, leadership instability, and deep-seated divisions that continue to plague the party at all levels are no longer reconcilable,” he wrote.

“These unfortunate realities have hindered the PDP’s ability to fulfil its founding vision and effectively serve the Nigerian people.”
The former speaker said he had contributed his quota to the PDP but must now chart a new course.
“However, in the interest of my people and the mandate I hold, I must take a principled stand that allows me to pursue a more effective pathway toward development, unity, and good governance,” he said.

Onobun expressed appreciation to the PDP for the platform the party provided and thanked colleagues he worked with over time.
“I also express my gratitude to all leaders and colleagues I have had the privilege of working with,” he added.
The resignation letter was copied to the acting local government, state, and national chairmen of the PDP.
On Thursday, Matthew Iduoriyekemwen, director-general of the Asue Ighodalo campaign organisation for the 2024 Edo governorship election, resigned from the PDP.

Iduoriyekemwen said the PDP has lost the vision of its founding fathers and no longer represents the ideals on which it was built.
Dele Momodu, publisher of Ovation magazine and former presidential aspirant, also resigned his membership of the PDP in a letter dated July 17 and addressed to the PDP ward chairman in Ihievbe, Owan east LGA, Edo state.
