Former Kaduna governor, ex-minister granted bail after five days in prison

A federal high court sitting in Kaduna on Wednesday granted bail to Ramalan Yero, former governor of Kaduna and three others.

Mohammed Shuaibu, the presiding judge, granted each of the accused persons bail in the sum of N1 million and two sureties in like sum.

Shuaibu said the sureties must own a landed property in Kaduna state.

The court also ordered the accused persons to deposit their international passports to the court registrar.

Yero alongside Nuhu Wya, former minister of state power; Haruna Gaya, former Kaduna state chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP); Hamza Ishaq, former secretary to Kaduna state government were remanded in prison custody on May 31, 2018.

They were arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on a four-count charge bordering on money laundering, criminal conspiracy, misappropriation of public funds and breach of trust.

The prosecution counsel had kicked against the bail, arguing that the defendants were likely to jump bail if granted to them.

The judge, however, ruled that the offence was a bailable one.

The case was adjourned till September 26, 2018, for hearing.
