Four killed as flood ravages Gombe communities

The Gombe police command says four persons have died in flooding incidents across the state following recent downpours.

Buhari Abdullahi, police spokesperson in Gombe, said in a statement on Tuesday that the command received reports of four incidents of drowning that occurred in Hayin kwarin-Misau; Bojude, Bajoga and Difa communities in Akko, Kwami, Funakaye and Yamaltu Deba LGAs of the state.

He said the victims, who are all children and teenagers, drowned in rivers, erosion sites and unprotected water channels.

“The Gombe state police command wishes to alert and sensitise members of the public on the need for heightened caution and vigilance around water bodies,” the statement reads.

“This is in view of the rainy season, as cases of accidental drowning continue to pose a serious public safety concern.”

The police spokesperson advised residents to steer clear of open or unregulated water bodies, especially during heavy rainfall when water currents could be unpredictable.

He also urged parents, guardians, and school administrators to monitor children closely and prevent them from playing outdoors in the rain or going near water channels.

He reiterated the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property in the state.

“Do not attempt to walk, drive, or swim through flooded areas; report dangerous erosion sites or exposed drainage channels to the relevant authorities,” he added.
