Four inmates have reportedly died at the Nigerian Correctional Centre, Kosere area of Ile-Ife, Osun state during an attempted jailbreak.

A top security officer, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, disclosed the development to NAN on Tuesday.

The officer said some inmates had planned to escape during the morning sanitation, but while attempting to flee the centre, they injured a warder.

He added that the inmates were about to force their way out when security agents repelled them, killing four of them in the process.

The officer added that other inmates who wanted to escape ran back to the centre.

When contacted, Sola Adeotan, spokesperson of the Osun command of the correctional service, said there was no information on the incident.

However, Yemisi Opalola, public relations officer of the Osun police command, confirmed the incident but said she needed more time to get the details.
