From Okocha to Iwobi… EPL celebrates Nigerian footballers who have featured in the league

The English Premier League has celebrated the wealth of Nigerian football talent that has featured for its numerous clubs over the years. 

In a post on X on Friday, the league celebrated the “greatness” of Nigerian footballers as part of a thread commemorating its diverse array of talent.

Past and present Super Eagles stars were recognised in a poster with the Nigerian map and flag on full display.

Jay Jay Okocha, Kanu Nwankwo, Obafemi Martins, Mikel Obi, Yakubu Aiyegbeni, Joseph Yobo, Shola Ameobi, and Victor Anichebe were among those celebrated.

Alex Iwobi, Calvin Bassey, Kelechi Iheanacho, Taiwo Awoniyi, Ola Aina, Wilfred Ndidi and Frank Onyenka are some of the current generation of footballers recognised.

Nigeria is the African country with the highest number of players to have featured in the EPL since 1992 — with 57.

For the 2025/26 season, eight Nigerian players will be playing in the league, with the purchases of Tolu Arokodare, Samuel Chukwueze, and Chrisantus Uche by Wolves, Fulham, and Crystal Palace, respectively.

Iwobi is currently tied with Ameobi as the Nigerian player with the highest EPL appearances. They both have 298 caps each.

Yakubu Aiyegbeni remain the country’s leading goalscorer in the league with 95 goals.
