Barely a month after Sulley Muntari and Kevin-Prince Boateng were expelled from Ghana’s World Cup squad for alleged indiscipline, the West African country is in the news yet again for the wrong reason.
Ghanaian judoka Emmanuel Nartey was ejected from the country’s contingent at the ongoing Commonwealth Games Village for gross indiscipline.
In Brazil, Boateng was accused of using “vulgar verbal insults targeted at coach Kwesi Appiah” and Muntari was guilty of an “unprovoked physical attack on an executive committee member” and now Nartey has continued from where they stopped, literally taking the baton to Scotland.
Nartey, who is a serving officer in the British army, showed disrespect to Ghanaian officials after he was paid his allowances on Sunday morning.
The judoka accosted Ghana’s deputy minister of youth and sports, Vincent Oppong Asamoah, about payment for expenses he insisted he had incurred, but for which he had not yet presented receipts.
When the official asked him to channel his request through the Judo federation with the necessary supporting documents, Nartey reacted disrespectfully.
He started casting aspersions, calling the officials derogatory names while suggesting the amount to be paid him was very little compared to expenses that other athletes had been reimbursed for. Despite pleas from his colleagues and coaches to withdraw his earlier statements and apologise, Nartey vehemently refused and he had to be expelled from camp.
