FRSC officials inspecting scene of the accident
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says 21 people have died in a road accident along the Zaria-Kano expressway.
In a statement on Sunday, Olusegun Ogungbemide, the FRSC spokesperson, said the accident, which involved a DAF truck and a Toyota Hiace commercial bus, occurred at about 8:20am at Kasuwar Dogo, in the Dakatsale area of Kano.
Ogungbemide said the accident happened when the commercial bus driver, who drove against traffic flow, had a head-on collision with an oncoming truck.
He noted that out of the 24 people involved in the crash, 21 persons (19 male adults and two female adults) lost their lives, while three others sustained injuries.

“Preliminary investigations by the FRSC rescue and crash investigation team revealed that the crash was caused by a route violation on the part of the commercial Toyota Hiace bus driver, who drove against traffic flow, resulting in a fatal head-on collision with the oncoming truck,” the statement reads.
Ogungbemide said the remains of the victims have been deposited at a nearby mortuary, noting that rescue teams worked with other emergency responders to clear the road and restore normal traffic flow.
He added that Shehu Mohammed, FRSC corps marshal, commiserated with the families of the victims.

The FRSC spokesperson said the corps marshal warned motorists, especially commercial and truck drivers, against traffic violations, noting that such behaviours continue to cause avoidable loss of lives.
He urged commuters to report dangerous driving behaviour using the FRSC mobile app, the toll-free number 122, or any FRSC patrol team.
“The corps will continue its nationwide enforcement operations and public education campaigns to ensure safer roads for all,” Ogungbemide added.
