FUOYE lecturers begin indefinite strike over unpaid salary

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) has declared an indefinite strike over unpaid salaries.

The union announced this in a letter addressed to Olubunmi Shittu, the institution’s acting vice-chancellor.

The letter was jointly signed by Ojo Abayomi Fagbuagun, the branch chairman, and Ngwu Benitho, the financial secretary

It stated that the strike would continue until the salaries were paid.

The ASUU branch said the strike is in line with the national body’s directive.

“This is to notify the university administration that the national executive council of ASUU has directed that in any case, where academic staff salary is not paid latest by the third day of every month, the affected branch of ASUU should proceed on strike until the salary is paid,” the letter read in part.

“As a consequence of the above, we are using this medium to inform the administration that the ASUU-FUOYE branch has proceeded on strike until our salary is paid.

“This strike is total, indefinite and comprehensive. The decision of the national is hereby communicated.”

ASUU’s national body has been at loggerheads with the federal government over an unfulfilled 2009 collective-bargaining agreement.

A key renegotiation committee chaired by Yayale Ahmed submitted its report in February 2025, but the government has yet to act on it, prompting claims that trust has been destroyed.

Lecturers continue to wait for the release of withheld salaries worth over three months, unpaid promotion arrears, and other allowances.

The 2009 ASUU-FGN agreement is a pact for better funding of universities, improved staff welfare (salaries, allowances, pensions), and revitalisation of infrastructure to raise academic standards.

This has left many undergraduate students in Nigeria’s federal universities uncertain about what the coming weeks hold for their studies.
