Abdullahi Ganduje, governor of Kano, says he will accept any decision reached by the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF) on financial autonomy for the judiciary.

Ganduje stated this when representatives of Kano and Ungogo branches of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) visited him on Tuesday.

The Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) is currently on strike to protest the failure of states to implement full autonomy for the judiciary.

On Monday, the NGF finally agreed to implement autonomy for state legislature and judiciary, with effect from May.

Speaking to the NBA representatives in Kano, Ganduje said he is ready to comply with what the NGF proposes, and commended the lawyers for their conduct.

“Whichever formula and procedure our forum, the Nigerian Governors’ Forum, comes up with, I am ready to accept and work with it,” he said.

“I am pleased with the way you conducted yourself in pressing your demands. This shows you are learned.”

Ganduje, who spoke on the need for separation of powers, said in Kano, his administration is doing its best to support other arms of government.

The governor highlighted some of the interventions of his administration as it relates to the judiciary, including the construction of the court of appeal building in the state.

“We also paid the rent for their staff accommodation for two years and we furnished them very well,” he added.
