Operatives of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service have responded to a fire outbreak at a market in the council bus stop of the Ikotun area of the state.

Adeseye Magaret, director of the state rescue service, on Saturday, said the explosion in the area was triggered by a leak from a gas cylinder in the market.

She added that the fire quickly spread across the market and before the operatives of the fire service could get there, seven shops had been affected.

The scene of the fire incident

“The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service responded to a fire call today at 14:10 hrs when a fire erupted in a market at 2nd Junction, Governor’s Road Council Bus Stop, Ikotun, Lagos,” the director said.

“The incident was triggered by a gas cylinder leakage and subsequent explosion within one of the shops, rapidly spreading to neighbouring shops numbering seven, necessitating an immediate emergency response.”

Magaret said multiple agencies of the state, including the police, Lagos Neighborhood Safety Corps (LNSC) and Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) were on the ground to curtail the incident.

“Preliminary investigations point to negligence during the refilling of a gas cylinder as the probable cause of the incident,” she added.
