A United Nations official, who contracted Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in Liberia and was flown to Germany for adequate treatment, has died.

Germany presently has seven health facilities capable of treating highly infectious patients in isolation but has now decided that it will stop admitting Ebola patients from West Africa to prevent an outbreak in the country.

The 56-year-old medic was admitted into St. Georg Clinic in Leipzig, a city located at 200 kilometers from Berlin, capital of Germany, on Thursday.

The deceased, who hailed from Sudan, was the third sufferer of the virus to have sought medical attention in Germany.

Doctors at the hospital had described his condition as “highly critical, but stable” when he was brought in.

The clinic on Tuesday issued a statement that their patient had died on Monday night “in spite of intensive medical measures and the best efforts on behalf of the medical staff”.

There have been about 8,000 Ebola patients this year alone, recording more than 4,000 deaths.

Since the outbreak of the virus in Feburary, USA, Spain, Germany,  Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Democratic Republic of Congo and Nigeria are countries that have recorded casualties.

Only Senegal was able to prevent death after recording a case.
