Girl Child Day: Male students celebrate female classmates at Lagos school

October 11
22:48 2021

Male students at Idimu Junior High School, Lagos, on Monday, celebrated their female classmates as part of activities commemorating the International Day of the Girl Child.

The celebration took place during an interactive session organised for female students by the Family and Youth Support Initiative (FYSI), a non-governmental organisation.

The interactive season was organised to mark the International Day of the Girl Child, which is celebrated annually on October 11.

In line with this year’s theme, ‘Digital Generation, Our Generation’, the interactive session focused on the “mindful, beneficial and deliberate” use of digital technologies, especially social media.

Some of the male students came out with placards celebrating their female classmates and also took turns to speak about the unique qualities of the girl child.

They later danced and sang a popular song by Sola Allyson, a female Nigerian gospel artiste, on the special qualities of females and how they are perfectly created by God.

The session was facilitated by Bukoladeremi Ladigbolu, executive director of FYSI, who spoke on how female students can use social media for good, rather than becoming addicted to it.

She also spoke to them on dealing with online abuse, as well as how they can take advantage of digital media to enhance their understanding of and improve their performance in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM).

At the end of the session, the children were gifted branded writing materials, including exercise books and pens.
