Telecommunications firm Globacom has unveiled a new service, the Glo Campus Booster, to help students of institutions of higher learning secure unhindered access to the Internet.

The first-of-its-kind product is designed to aid academic activities and social networking among students and staff of tertiary institutions across Nigeria, and among other benefits, it will support and improve education standards, create intellectual wealth for students, and provide access to information on research topics and thesis writing.

Unveiling the product at Globacom’s headquarters in Lagos, Sola Mogaji, the company’s senior manager, events and sponsorship, described the Glo Campus Booster as “a special data plan that allows students and others on campus to get up to eight times more data value whenever they use their Glo lines on campuses”.

Explaining how the product functions, Mogaji said a N200 data recharge would guarantee a subscriber 400MB of data, which is eight times more than the 50MB of data a subscriber would normally get with a N200 recharge.

In the same vein, a recharge of N500 will give 1 gigabyte of data on campus. The service, he further explained, is available on all Nigerian campuses nationwide, including military, police, customs and immigration training institutions.

“Students as well as staff on campuses can enjoy this offer when they subscribe to a Glo Campus Data Plan of N200 and above,” he said. “They will subsequently enjoy enhanced data offered while used in the campuses.”

He added that another juicy feature of the package is that the Glo Campus Data Plans can be gifted to another subscriber on any other campus within the country.

“As soon as any subscriber on the Campus Data Plan enters a school campus anywhere in Nigeria, he will be notified via a flash message that he has entered a Glo Campus Zone,” he said, urging Nigerians to dial *777# to chose a preferred plan from N200 and above.

“Globacom is a world-class brand, re-engineered to provide voice and data services bundled with great devices. We are more committed than ever before to provide best value for money and making our products and services more accessible to our customers.”

The launch was attended by student union leaders from the University of Lagos, the Lagos State University and the University of Ibadan.

Suleiman Adeyemi Wasiu, president, Lagos state university students’ union government, who spoke on behalf of the students, said: “It is a welcome idea. First, it will make researches easier and cheaper and secondly it is a form of economic advantage as it will drive traffic into the school which would boost economic activities on campus. We plead that Glo should not stop the product.

Also, Roland Onyeka, social Secretary, University of Lagos, who led his school’s delegation, said: “The Campus Booster is a good product, which will make life easier and cheaper on campus.

“It will facilitate our research and assignments, which we have to put on PDF files. It will also keep us more on the campus as we can now download our favourite movies without going.”
