The Golden Eaglets were in ruthless form as they thrashed Cote d’Ivoire 5-1 in the U17 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying tournament.

The team lost its opening Group B match to Burkina Faso on Monday, but on Thursday, Manu Garba’s boys led 4-0 at half-time.

With the Eaglets needing a win to get their campaign back on track, they did so with class.

As early as the 10th minute, Nigeria went two goals up courtesy of Olakunle Olusegun and Olatomi Olaniyan before Hassan Hussain, Oluwatimilehin Adeniyi and Akinwunmi Amoo got on the scoresheet to put the game beyond the reach of the Ivorians.

The Baby Elephants got their lone goal from the penalty spot in the second stanza.

A new format approved for the competition says countries in each regional bloc will converge on one country to play a qualifying tournament, as against the old format of home-and-away games.

Only the winning team from each of the blocs (apart from the bloc of the defending champions that produces two teams) will qualify for the tournament which will be hosted by Tanzania in 2019.
