Golf: Ikoyi ladies set for 45th tee-off

Nigeria’s most prestigious lady’s golf championship will tee-off at the Golf section of Ikoyi Club 1938, Lagos on Tuesday.

Lola Ajibola, lady captain of the section, said the annual event, which runs till Friday, would see the best skilled golfers in Nigeria competing for honours.

It would also be judged over 36 holes from Wednesday to Friday after Tuesday is used for the practice session.

“This year’s event is supported by Total, First Bank Nigeria Limited, Megamound, The George, Spar, JustFood West Africa, UBA, Zircon Marine, Flour Mills Nigeria, Amni Petroleum and MTN, among others,” Ajibola said.

According to the captain, the competition is approved by global golf bodies for players in Nigeria as it rewards best performers with world ranking points.

“It is for this reason that we have received entries from more than 200 players from the major golf clubs in Nigeria,” she also said.

Ify Onukwuba, publicity secretary of Golf section, said that participation of foreign players in the four-day competition underscores its reputation.

“We intend to maximise the opportunity to explore ways of expanding our scope further,” she said.

Nkoli Mouka, a member of the planning committee, also said the competition would be a strokeplay event where the winner would be the player that returns the best gross score in the three competitive days.

“There will be prizes for all participants, including nett, longest drive and nearest to the pin,” Muoka said.
