The Gombe state government has inaugurated a 10-member committee to probe the violence that erupted in Billiri LGA over the appointment of the new traditional ruler of Tangale kingdom.

The development comes weeks after violence broke out in Billiri over the claim that Inuwa Yahaya, governor of the state, did not want to announce the candidate selected by the kingmakers.

This was after the death of Abdu Baba Maisharu II, the immediate past Mai of Tangale Kingdom — he died in January 2021.

However, in March, Danladi Sanusi Maiyamba was announced as the new Mai Tangale in Billiri, after protests leading to violence that claimed lives and properties.

On Monday, Yahaya inaugurated the 10-member committee chaired by Mahmud Gurama, a retired justice, with the mandate of probing the remote causes of the crisis and identifying those who lost their lives.

The committee was given a period of 60 days to submit its report and recommendations.

The Gombe governor, who expressed concern that the violence could have political or religious leanings, added that fake news contributed to the crisis.

According to him, the roles of the committee include, but are not limited to: “recommend sanctions or remedial measures against such person or group of persons; receive and investigate complaints from victims or the families of victims; make appropriate recommendations to government on measures and means of preventing the future occurrence of violent protests, and how to make perpetrators account for their acts”.
