The Gombe state government has introduced a compulsory monthly sanitation exercise as part of efforts to maintain a clean and sustainable environment for residents.

Inuwa Yahaya, governor of Gombe, gave the approval for the exercise to be observed every last Saturday of each month, beginning from April.

The state government said there will be restriction of human and vehicular movement during the exercise.

In a memo on Tuesday, Mohammed Fawu, Gombe commissioner for water, environment and forest resources, urged residents to take advantage of the exercise to clean up their surroundings.

“In line with this administration’s resolve to ensure provision of sustainable and healthy environment for human habitation, Gov. Yahaya has approved the conduct of monthly general environmental sanitation exercise in the state,” he said.

“This is to be observed by the general public every last Saturday of the month. The exercise is to be conducted from 8.00 a.m. and 10.00 a.m.

“Also, all MDAs and the general public are hereby directed to comply strictly with the directive.”

Fawu added that officials from the ministry of water, environment and forest resources, and the Gombe State Environmental Sanitation and Protection Agency (GOSEPA) would monitor the exercise to ensure strict compliance.

NAN reports that the state government recently constructed waste collection points in various communities in the metropolis and in the suburbs, to ensure efficient waste management.
