Google has announced $350,000 in cloud credits to support African startups using AI to solve local challenges.
In a statement on Tuesday, the tech giant said the support would be delivered through the ninth cohort of the Google for Startups Accelerator Africa — a three-month programme that offers technical mentorship and access to global investors.
The company said 15 startups were selected from nearly 1,500 applications across the continent.
According to the statement, Nigeria led the list with six startups, including platforms focused on digital health, credit checks, global payments, importation, software testing, and fraud detection.

Google said the remaining startups, drawn from Kenya, Ghana, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Senegal, and South Africa, are deploying AI solutions across sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, logistics, and financial services.
Folarin Aiyegbusi, head of startup ecosystem, Africa at Google, said the company is committed to supporting African founders building context-aware solutions with AI.
“African startups are at the forefront of solving critical challenges across the continent,” he said.

“This program reflects our belief that AI can be transformative when shaped by those who understand the context deeply”.
He added that Google is excited to support the founders, as they are building for impact and helping to shape an inclusive AI ecosystem across Africa.
