The governor of Ondo State Olusegun Mimiko has defected from the Labour Party to the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, former minister of aviation, announced on Friday.

Fani-Kayode wrote on his timeline on Twitter, “Glad to see that my friend Governor Segun Mimiko has left the Labour Party and returned to the PDP. Welcome back.”

The defection of Mimiko to the PDP is coming after more than 1000 members of the LP in Ondo State defected to the PDP in July.

Mimiko was said to have consulted with LP stalwarts, his political aides and commissioners before making the move to the PDP, a party he left in 2006.

The shift of Mimiko to the ruling party is not surprising as there have been indications that he would dump the LP for the PDP owing to his interest in teaming up with President Goodluck Jonathan for the 2015 election.

Mimiko, who is a known supporter of Jonathan, worked for his re-election in 2011.

He is the second high profile politician to defect to the PDP in less than a week. On Saturday, Nuhu Ribadu defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the ruling party.

More defections across the political parties are expected as 2015 nears.
