Gowon postpones event to honour politicians, defence chief over pending election matters

Yakubu Gowon, a former head of state, has postponed a “banquet of honour” that is being planned for some public office holders.

George Akume, secretary to the government of the federation (SGF), Nyesom Wike, minister of federal capital territory (FCT), Christopher Musa, chief of defence staff, and some state governors are among those who will be recognised at the event.

The event was initially billed for November 19, but has been shifted to a date to be announced in 2024.

In a statement on Thursday, Adakole Ijogi, on behalf of the planning committee of the event, said the shift in the date is owing to pending election cases in the courts.

“On behalf of the Banquet of Honor Planning Committee wishes to most dutifully inform all invited dignitaries and guests of a shift in the date of the banquet to another day early next year,” the statement reads.

“This is unfortunately due to the prolonged legal matters arising from the elections yet to be resolved.

“Please accept our most profound apologies for the date change, as we shall soon confirm a new date and shall delightfully renew our invitation to all dignitaries and guests.”

While the offices of Akume, Wike, and Musa do not have any legal encumbrances, some governors are in the courts defending their mandates.
