Most parts of the federal capital territory, Abuja, witnessed heavy vehicular traffic on Tuesday, as all points leading to the Eagle Square, venue of the declaration ceremony of President Goodluck Jonathan, were blocked.

The Nigeria police had warned residents on Monday to expect heavy traffic on the roads and advised them to take alternative routes.

The president is expected to declare his intention to run for a second term office, having already obtained the presidential nomination form of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

PDP stalwarts and key government officials are expected to attend the event.

Jonathan’s declaration is coming after a long period of silence regarding whether he would re-contest.

Rallies had been held by the Transformation Ambassadors of Nigeria (TAN), which raised 17 million signatures urging him to re-contest.

Meanwhile, the traffic congestion extends to the satellite towns of Karu and Nyanya, with soldiers rummaging through vehicles coming from that axis.

Nyanya has been the scene of two bomb blasts, hence the strengthening of security in the area to preclude any embarrassment to the president that may come as a result of an attack.
