Education Data, Research and Evaluation in Nigeria (EDOREN) initiative, a UK government-funded project of the Department for International Development (DFID), has called on the federal government to invest more in the education sector.

EDOREN made the call at its project advisory committee (PAC) meeting in Abuja.

It said the result of such studies would guide in formulating appropriate policies for Nigeria’s education sector.

Speaking at the event, Oladele Akogun, EDOREN’s country director, said the project was designed to generate new evidence and understanding of how best to support equitable access and improved learning outcomes for all Nigerian children.

“Aside various researches we have done since the commencement of the project, we are glad to report that EDOREN’s impact include Nigeria’s Annual Education Conference (NAEC) which is hosted in partnership with the federal ministry of education, and the www.nigeria-education.org website which provides online access to a range of information on basic education including research, researcher profiles, journals and institutions,” Akogun said.

While explaining that the organisation’s research teams usually comprise members of the academia and policy makers to ensure government uptake of research findings, Akogun urged education stakeholders in the country to work together in ensuring the sustainability of the project’s legacies when it ends in March 2018.

Launched in 2013, EDOREN, aims to embed research, evaluation and learning in DFID’s education support in the country, aside enhancing Nigeria’s capacity to generate and use quality educational data, research and evaluation for policy and strategy making in the country.

The PAC meeting, chaired by Mamman Shuaibu, a professor, had in attendance different stakeholders in the education sector from within and outside Nigeria.
