Group seeks economic revival in Ijebuland, calls for public-private collaboration

Ayodeji Okuwa, head of the IJBOYS, the United States (US) chapter

The Ijebu Boys’ Association (IJBOYS) has called for urgent and strategic action to revive the economic fortunes of Ijebu-land, lamenting decades of decline in previously thriving sectors.

In a statement on Thursday by Ayodeji Okuwa, head of the IJBOYS, the United States (US) chapter, the group recalled the golden era of Ijebu’s industrial vibrancy.

Okuwa said Ijebuland was home to numerous thriving industries that provided employment, sustained families, and fuelled economic growth.

“Along the old Lagos Road en route Okun-Owa, we boasted of the Ikangba Industrial Estate that housed the following firms: Gateway Pharmaceutical Company, Odutola Food Industry, Novelty Lace, Waddai Shoe Factory, and Sunrise Bottling Company, among others. SOESON Company, manufacturers of Refrigerators at Irewon,” the statement reads.

“Aiyepe flourished with its Lace Factory, while Imagbon proudly housed the renowned Beer Factory, producer of the iconic ‘33 Export Lager Beer.

“Ijebu-Igbo was a hub for timber and forestry products, alongside Shokas Lace Industry and the legendary Haruna Ishola Phonodics Recording Studio on the Oru-Ibadan Road.

“Ijebu-Imushin thrived with the Temple and Golders Industry; S. T Nigeria Limited, manufacturer of ST Antiseptic and laundry soap; while Ijebu Waterside was home to the Iwopin Paper Mill.

“The J4 axis served as a major labor market for Ijebu-land. Unfortunately, most of these industries have become moribund, leading to a significant economic downturn that has persisted for decades.”

A COMMITMENT TO IJEBULAND’S REVITALISATION, INDUSTRIALISATION

Okuwa, however, said the association is “committed to spearheading the revitalisation and industrialisation of Ijebuland through strategic private and public sector collaboration”.

He said Ijebu is blessed with natural resources and entrepreneurial heritage that can drive transformation if properly harnessed.

Highlighting ‘Garri Ijebu’ as a globally recognised product, IJBOYS called for a shift from subsistence farming to full-scale agricultural industrialisation through mechanisation and value-chain development.

The group outlined key infrastructure priorities to attract investment and unlock economic opportunities.

According to the statement, they include a comprehensive ring-road network to connect all Ijebu towns, a reliable electricity and water supply, and a modern rail system linking Ijebu-Ode to Lagos, Ibadan, and Abeokuta.

The association said improved infrastructure will stimulate business and also boost cultural tourism, especially the globally recognised Ojude-Oba festival.

On healthcare, IJBOYS pledged to expand its medical outreach programme and launch a community-based health insurance scheme to improve access to quality medical services for Ijebu residents.

“Our vision is a reindustrialized Ijebu-land that leverages its human and natural resources, fosters innovation, and empowers its people,” the group added.
