The Anambra government has declared Thursday and Friday as work-free days to enable civil servants prepare for the governorship election slated to hold on Saturday.

Willie Obiano, Anambra governor, announced the decision on Wednesday during an interactive session with workers at Jerome Udoji secretariat in Awka, the state capital.

Obiano said the public holiday will enable workers to travel to their various voting units before the election.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had, on Tuesday,  assured residents of a free and fair election.

Speaking during a meeting with members of the inter-agency consultative committee on election security in Awka, the Anambra capital, Mahmood Yakubu, INEC chairman, said the commission has received assurances from security operatives on safety of residents.

“The election is holding this weekend. Let me thank, first and foremost, the security agencies for your continuous support and also seize the opportunity to reassure the people of Anambra state that the election is holding on Saturday as scheduled,” he had said.

“The commission has done everything that it can to ensure that the election holds. The security agencies have also done whatever they can and are doing whatever that they can to ensure that the environment is secured for us to conduct free and fair elections in the state.
