Unknown gunmen on Sunday reportedly assassinated Tavershima Adyorough, principal special assistant on knowledge economy and investments to Samuel Ortom, governor of Benue state.

The gunmen were said to have invaded his residence at BIPC quarters in Nyiman, Makurdi, around 12 am on Sunday, where they shot him and his wife.

He was later confirmed dead at Benue State University Teaching Hospital, but his wife was reported to have survived.

Bashir Makama, the state commissioner of police, confirmed the incident.

He said the police were informed at 12:20am that two yet-to-be-identified gunmen stormed Adyorough’s residence, and subsequently shot him and his wife.

“The police on arrival rushed the couple to the BSU hospital where the man was confirmed dead while the wife is currently receiving treatment,” he said.

“Five expended cartridges were also recovered from the scene of the crime.”

The commissioner said investigation was in progress to fish out the gunmen, and he assured residents that the perpetrators would be made go face the law.

Ortom condemned the incident, ordering the immediate arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators.

In a statement issued by Terver Akase, his spokesman, the governor described the killing as “unacceptable and condemnable”.

While sympathising with the family of the deceased, the government and people of the state on the loss, he described Adyorough as a competent and dependable aide who worked with dedication and honesty.

Ortom had lost an aide in similar circumstances.

Denen Igbana, his senior special assistant on security matters, was murdered in 2016 at his residence in Makurdi.
