The police division in Ideato south LGA of Imo state was, on Thursday, attacked by gunmen who invaded the area with an explosive device.

The police command in Imo confirmed the development, but said the explosive caused “minimal damage”.

Michael Abattam, Imo police spokesman, in a statement, said the operatives repelled the attack, adding that no casualty was recorded.

“On 06/01/2022 at about 0230 hours, at Ideato South Police Station, some unknown gunmen came in their numbers, shooting sporadically, and threw an Improvised Explosive Device (I.E.D.) into the station,” the statement reads.

“The hoodlums were immediately repelled by the command’s tactical team and the police operatives of the division and in the ensuing gun duel, the hoodlums were overwhelmed by the superior fire-power of the police.

“However, no life or arms were lost and the detonated (I.E.D.) only caused minimal damage.”

While commending its officers for their efforts in tackling the situation, Hussaini Rabiu, Imo commissioner of police, advised members of the public, especially those residing in surrounding communities, to assist the police by providing credible information.

Rabiu also encouraged residents to report any person seen treating bullet wounds or hiding within the communities to the nearest police station.
