Some gunmen have killed Daniel Yatai, father of Philip Yatai, a reporter with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), in Kaduna state.

The older Yatai, aged 86, is said to have retired from Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) in 1991.

Daniel’s niece and Amos Magbon, rector of the Federal School of Statistics, Manchok, in Kaura LGA of the state, were also abducted during the attack which occurred on Tuesday night.

The gunmen reportedly struck at about 11:15pm.

“We were six in the house — myself, my dad, my mum, two of my nieces and a nephew,” NAN quoted Christiana Yatai, daughter of the deceased, as saying.

“They asked us to open the door and when we refused, they broke the main entrance and gained access to the house.

“My father was in his room and one of them wearing a mask, who was outside, shot him through the window and the bullet hit him from the back.

“Those who entered the house later went to his room and finished him up. They went away with one of my nieces, Brenda Friday, aged 21, and a final year student of Kaduna State College of Education, Gidan Waya.”

The younger Yatai said the gunmen have demanded N15 million for the release of his niece.

Innocent Magbon, brother of the rector who was abducted, said the gunmen demanded N15 million for his release.

The police are yet to comment on the development.

Meanwhile, the development comes days after gunmen killed the father of Hamilton Onuchukwu, an Owerri-based journalist, at his home in Okporo, Orlu LGA, Imo state.
