Gunmen kill two police officers in Enugu

Two police officers have been reportedly killed by gunmen in Enugu state.

NAN reports that two police checkpoints in Enugu south LGA and Amagunze in Nkanu east LGA were attacked on Wednesday evening.

A vehicle and a motorcycle were reportedly burnt during the attack.

Daniel Ndukwe, spokesman of the Enugu police command, while confirming the incident, said details about the attacks were “sketchy”.

”Preliminary investigations have commenced. Further development will be communicated, please,” Ndukwe was quoted as saying.

Obinna Nweke, a witness, told the news agency that the duel “was like a war”.

“What happened at the section of the road at Obeagu Amechi community was like a war situation as the heavy shooting continued unabated and everybody had to run for safety,” Nweke said

“After the gun duel between the police and unknown gunmen around 7:00 pm, the whole Enugu-Amechi-Agbani Road was deserted.

Chimezie Okoh, another witness, said a civilian was hit by a stray bullet.

“Thank God, myself and the commercial motorcycle operator carrying me are still alive and not hit by stray bullets emanating from the cross-fire,” Okoh said.

“However, I saw a policeman whose head had been shattered with bullets and another policeman lying lifeless.

“And after passing a small bridge near the checkpoint, I saw a lifeless civilian, probably hit by stray bullet, in front of a building suspected to be a church.”
