Gunmen have shot dead Matthew Eya, the parish priest of St. Charles Parish, Eha Ndiagu, Nsukka LGA of Enugu state.
According to Zagazola Makama, counter-insurgency publication, a police source said the priest was attacked around 9:10 pm on Friday by assailants riding on a motorcycle during a heavy downpour.
“On arrival at the scene, police operatives observed that the victim’s ash-coloured Toyota Camry (2008 model) with registration number ENU 145 SU was riddled with bullets, vandalised, and thoroughly searched by the attackers,” Makama quoted the source as saying.
“Twelve expended shells of 7.62×39mm ammunition were recovered at the scene.

“The priest’s body was taken to Bishop Shanahan Hospital, Nsukka, where a medical doctor certified him dead on arrival. His remains were deposited at the hospital’s mortuary for preservation and autopsy.”
The source added that preliminary investigation was ongoing while the state criminal investigation department (SCID) had been directed to take over the case.
“Intensified efforts are being made to track down the fleeing suspects and bring them to justice,” the source added.
