Hissene Habre, former ruler of Chad, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for crimes against humanity.

Habre was convicted of rape, slavery and ordering killings during his rule from 1982 to 1990, the BBC reports.

He was tried by a court backed by the African Union in Senegal, and was subsequently convicted on Monday.

He is the first ex-African leader to be convicted of crimes against humanity by such a court.

During his trial, Habre intermittently disrupted proceedings challenging the legitimacy of the court to try him.

He is alleged to have killed at least 40,000 people during his rule.

He was exiled in 2013 to Senegal.
