President Muhammadu Buhari has condemned the killing of Bolanle Raheem, a Lagos lawyer.

He said this in a statement on Tuesday by Garba Shehu, presidential spokesman.

Raheem, who was pregnant, was killed on Sunday in the Ajah area of Lagos when she and her family were returning from Christmas service.

It was reported that some officers attached to the Ajiwe police station in Ajah had ordered the car conveying the family to stop, and during this time, an officer allegedly shot at the car and the bullet hit the lawyer.

According to the statement, Buhari said he was saddened to hear of the incident, calling it “heinous and senseless”.

The president also said he has directed the police authorities to take “the strongest possible action” against the culprit.

He added that the incident is a wake-up call to law enforcement agencies to ensure the full implementation of reforms instituted by the current administration on weapon handling and the protection of the rights of citizens.

“In this hour of grief, the nation stands in solidarity with the bereaved family and the NBA. I assure that justice will be done in this case,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Police Service Commission (PSC) has called on the police to put in place a formidable programme in weapon handling as cases of unprovoked shooting and killing of innocent Nigerians have become worrisome.

The Lagos police command has also said two officers arrested over the killing would be released on Tuesday, after being found to not have been involved in the crime.
