House seeks compensation for victims of terrorism

House seeks compensation for victims of terrorism
June 26
18:59 2014

Following Wednesday’s Abuja bomb blast that killed 22 people and injured 17, the federal house of representatives has proposed fund compensation for victims of terrorism in the country.

Hon. Chris Azubougu, a representative from Anambra who moved a motion for the compensation, stated that it would ensure that victims of terrorism are given a helping hand to rebuild their lives.

The resolution followed motion, which he titled ‘Bomb attacks on Wuse District on June 25’.

He expressed sadness over the blast, saying that those killed were people going about their daily business in order to earn a living for themselves and their families.

“This is a tragedy for their families who are now bereaved, and for all of us who now have to watch helplessly as our country is turned into a theatre of war,” he said.

Azubogu expressed concerns that Nigeria, as the giant of Africa, has become a place where people are maimed by bomb blasts while seeking their ‘daily bread’.

He urged the house to look into the matter.

It was unanimously adopted without debate when put to vote by the speaker, Aminu Tambuwal.

The house also agreed to review the preparedness of security services in the country in terms of intelligence-gathering and operational capacity to confront terror in the country.

The lower chamber further resolved to constitute a delegation to pay condolence visits to victims of the blast in the hospitals.

In another motion, the house urged the federal government to immortalise the late emir of Kano, Ado Bayero, as well as former NAFDAC director-general, Dora Akunyili.
