A flood that occurred after a heavy downpour in the early hours of Saturday has destroyed property and submerged houses in several communities in Jalingo, capital of Taraba state.

The rain which lasted for about three hours caused flooding in Mayo-Gwoi, Nukai, Abuja Phase 2, Magami and Rubi areas of the state.

Houses, businesses, property, farms and animals were lost to the flood.

Residents of the community have called on the state government and emergency management agencies to come to their aid.

Nasiru Bobboji, chairman of Jalingo LGA, says there is a need for urgent provision of relief materials and medication to victims of the flood.

Bobboji said more than 200 houses were affected and thousands of people were displaced, including women and children.

“You can see many houses collapsed, property including foodstuffs destroyed by the flood and therefore there is the urgent need to assist the victims,” he said.
