Several Nigerian players in English football leagues were in action on the first day of 2019.

Kicking off in England, Alex Iwobi provided an assist for Arsenal in their 4-1 victory over Fulham in the English Premier League. Bukayo Saka replaced Iwobi in the 83rd minute.

Wilfred Ndidi played all 90 minutes for Leicester City while teammate Kelechi Iheanacho wasn’t listed in the 1-0 win at Everton.

In Merseyside, skillful winger Ademola Lookman didn’t make the cut for Everton.

Nigerian Red hot Tammy Abraham netted a brace for championship side, Aston Villa, who drew 2-2 with QPR. Ebere Eze was on song for the visitors.

Semi Ajayi exhibited a solid display for Rotherham United as they beat Preston North End 2-1.

Sammy Ameobi lasted 82 minutes for Bolton Wanderers in their 6-0 loss at Hull City.

Oghenekaro Etebo played full throttle for Stoke City as they lost 2-0 to Bristol City.

Josh Maja netted for Sunderland as they beat Blackpool 1-0. There were places for Marc Bola and Nathan Delfounso in the losers matchday squad.

The trio of Alex Samuel, Felix Onyedinma and Adebayo Akinfenwa failed to shine in Wycombe Wanderers’ 2-0 loss to Coventry.

Hope Akpan was not added to Bradford City squad that recorded a 3-0 win over Accrington Stanley.

Nicholas Ajose was an unused substitute for Charlton in their 2-1 win against Walsall.

Victor Adeboyejo made a cameo appearance for Barnsley as they drew 0-0 with Luton Town.
