Osinbajo to meet Nigerian community in Ghana amid ‘hostile’ business regulations

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo will, on Tuesday, hold a meeting with Nigerians in Ghana to discuss issues bothering on their welfare.

Earlier in August, Nigerian traders in Ghana had lamented the closure of their shops over failure to provide evidence of Ghana Promotion Investment Council (GIPC) registration.

According to the traders, the registration requires $1 million in foreign equity which they had found difficult to provide.

The incident happened two months after a building in the Nigerian mission in Ghana was demolished.

Over the past weeks, the two countries have been engaged in dialogue to seek solutions to the challenges.

In a statement on Tuesday, Laolu Akande, senior special assistant to Osinbajo on media and publicity, said although the vice president will represent President Muhammadu Buhari at an extraordinary summit of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on the situation in Mali, he would also meet with representatives of the Nigerian community in Ghana.

“Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, leaves Abuja this morning for Accra, Ghana to attend an Extraordinary Summit of the Economic Community of West African States on the situation in Mali,” Akande said.

“Prof. Osinbajo who is representing President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, at the summit will join other leaders in the sub-region to discuss the political crisis in Mali and the security situation in the sub-region at large.

“The Accra meeting will form part of several efforts by leaders in the sub region to resolve Mali’s political crisis.

“While in Accra, the vice president will also meet with representatives of the Nigerian community in Ghana to discuss issues bothering on their wellbeing in the West African country.

“Accompanying the vice president is the minister of state for foreign affairs, Amb. Zubairu Dada.”

Akande added that the vice president is expected back in the country later on Tuesday.
